October (previous year) — Discovery

• Talk to alumni, read blogs, watch YouTube info sessions
• Draft a shortlist of countries, subjects, program types
• Take a diagnostic mock GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL to see where you stand

November — Consultant selection

• Speak with 3–5 consultants; compare packages
• Choose one and sign up
• Begin shortlisting 12–20 universities

December — Test prep intensive

• Complete GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL preparation
• Book official test date for January or February
• Malaysian scholarships (JPA, Yayasan Khazanah) usually open in December — submit initial forms

January — Test done, essays begin

• Sit official test; retake if needed
• Start drafting SOP for top choice
• Request LORs (give recommenders 8 weeks)
• Yayasan Khazanah / Petronas / Bank Negara scholarship interviews typically January–February

February — Essays

• Complete SOP drafts for all universities
• Complete personal statements, essays, resume
• Consultant reviews: usually 3–5 rounds

March–April — Applications

• Submit early-deadline applications first (Ivy League deadlines are as early as December)
• Complete all remaining applications
• Begin thinking about visa documents (financial statements, sponsorship letters)

May — Waiting + interviews

• Interviews (30 min video calls) for some universities
• First admits typically arrive
• Compare admits carefully — cost, aid, fit

June — Decisions + I-20

• Accept your final choice, pay deposit, receive I-20
• Book visa interview slot at US Embassy KL immediately — July slots fill fast

July — Visa + pre-departure

• Attend visa interview
• Book flight tickets (prices spike in July)
• Sort out banking (USD/GBP accounts before departure)

August — Departure; September — Classes begin
