How Much Does It Really Cost to Study in the USA?
Jul 9th 2026
"RM 250,000 should be enough" is what many Malaysian students hear from their agent. Then they land in Ann Arbor, Boston, or New York and realise the true annual cost is closer to RM 320,000–380,000. Here's what's actually going into that number.
Tuition (varies widely)
At public state universities (University of Texas Austin, UMass Amherst, Ohio State) international student tuition is typically USD 30,000–40,000/year (RM 135,000–180,000). At private universities (NYU, Northeastern, USC, Ivy League) it's USD 55,000–75,000/year (RM 245,000–335,000). Some highly ranked STEM programs (Georgia Tech Online MS, University of Illinois Online MCS) run USD 10,000–25,000/year (RM 45,000–110,000) — and yes, they're the same degree as the on-campus version.
Housing (USD 800–2,500/month, or RM 3,500–11,000/month)
The single biggest post-tuition line item. Boston, San Francisco, New York, and DC are on the high end. Midwestern cities and college towns (Ithaca, Ann Arbor, Bloomington) are much cheaper. On-campus housing is often more expensive than off-campus, but includes utilities and internet.
Food (USD 350–600/month, RM 1,500–2,700/month)
Cooking at home saves 60% versus eating out. Most Malaysian students cook at home 5 nights a week and eat out weekends. Grocery budget for a home cook is around USD 250/month; dining budget for someone who eats out often is USD 700+.
Health insurance (USD 1,500–3,500/year, RM 7,000–16,000)
Universities require proof of insurance. Their own plans are convenient but expensive. Third-party plans like ISO or Compass Rose are often 30% cheaper for equivalent coverage.
Books, supplies, travel & surprise fees
Textbooks USD 800–1,500/year — always rent, never buy new. Travel USD 1,000–3,000/year for KL ↔ US trips. Plus SEVIS fee USD 350, visa fee USD 185, and semester fees USD 200–800 for activities you may never use.
The realistic total for a 2-year MS at a mid-tier public
Tuition USD 70,000. Living USD 30,000. Fees + insurance + travel USD 10,000. Total: ~USD 110,000 = ~RM 490,000.
How to reduce this
- Assistantships: RA/TA/GA positions can cover tuition + stipend
- Scholarships: Yayasan Khazanah US-track, Fulbright, university-specific merit
- Cheaper cities: Champaign-Urbana has a top-10 CS program at USD 500 rent
- Public universities: half the private tuition for arguably the same quality
At Scholar Hub, our scholarship advisory service helps you find the specific scholarships your profile qualifies for. Two hours of application work has recovered RM 75,000+ for past students.
