Six Countries That Are Cheaper Than You Think
Jul 9th 2026
The Malaysia → US → UK conversation dominates study-abroad discussions. But there's an entire tier of countries that offer degrees from world-ranked universities at a fraction of the cost, with easier visa paths and welcoming post-study work rights. If cost is your constraint, look here.
1. Germany — Free tuition at 30+ world-ranked universities
Germany's public universities charge zero tuition even for international students. You pay only a "semester fee" of around €150–€350 (RM 650–1,500) which includes public transport. Top universities: TU Munich (top-30 globally), RWTH Aachen, Heidelberg, LMU Munich. English-taught master's common. Post-study work visa: 18 months.
2. Ireland — English-speaking, work-friendly
€10,000–€20,000/year (RM 45,000–90,000) for international students at Trinity College Dublin, UCD, NUI Galway. English-speaking, EU degree recognition, 2-year post-study work visa.
3. France — Cheap tuition + Parisian life
Public French universities charge €2,770/year (RM 12,500). Yes, in Paris. Yes, at Sciences Po and Panthéon-Sorbonne. Living in Paris €1,200/month (RM 5,400); Lyon, Toulouse, Marseille 40% cheaper. Post-study work visa: 2 years.
4. Netherlands — English-speaking, strong tech ecosystem
€10,000–€18,000/year (RM 45,000–80,000). Almost all master's programs in English. TU Delft, University of Amsterdam, Erasmus Rotterdam are top-100 globally. Amsterdam is a major tech hub. Post-study work visa (Orientation Year): 1 year.
5. Italy — Public universities + heritage
€900–€4,000/year (RM 4,000–18,000) based on income. Politecnico di Milano and Bologna top-200 globally. Italian language required for most programs, but English-taught programs are growing.
6. Poland — Fastest-growing hidden gem
€2,000–€4,000/year (RM 9,000–18,000). Warsaw and Kraków affordable (€600/month, RM 2,700). English-taught programs common in Business, IT, and Medicine.
The catch (worth mentioning honestly)
- Language: Countries where local language matters (Germany, France, Italy) require basic proficiency
- Weather and cultural distance from Malaysia
- Job market: local language non-negotiable for jobs outside tech/research
If cost and post-study work rights matter more to you than "US/UK brand", consider 2–3 of these. Scholar Hub's country pages list every one with typical costs, English-taught programs, and post-study visa rules updated quarterly.
